Jackpine: What’s in a name?

Jack Pine happens to be the name of one of many North American pine family trees, but don’t let that confuse you. The company Jackpine and the Jack Pine species of tree have nothing in common. The company name resulted from an interesting application of the Sikh tradition practiced by its founder. In the Sikh tradition, children’s names are usually chosen by randomly selecting a page from the Sikh scriptures, taking the first letter on the page, and using that as the starting letter of the name. Gian Singh Sandhu, the company’s founder decided to apply this idea when looking for a name for his company and came up with the letter corresponding to the English ‘J’. The search was then on for a corporate name that would begin with ‘J’ and spoke of forestry, and Jackpine the company was born.
